Almost everyone reads the red battery symbol as “the battery needs charging” or “the battery is old”. It means neither. It is a charging system warning: the car has detected that the system which should be replenishing the battery while the engine runs is not doing so.
That matters because it changes the timescale. A low battery is a problem the next time you try to start. A charging fault is a problem right now, while you are driving, and it ends with the car stopping.
What is actually happening
While the engine runs, the alternator generates electricity, powers everything the car is using and tops the battery back up. When the light comes on, that has stopped. The car is running on what is stored in the battery alone, and everything electrical is draining it — ignition, lights, wipers, fans, the instrument display.
When the battery runs down far enough, the engine will stop, and it will not restart.
What to do
- Switch off every electrical load you can spare. Air conditioning, rear demister, heated seats, stereo, phone charging, interior lights. In daylight and dry weather this can make a real difference.
- Keep the engine running if you can. Switching off may well mean it does not start again. If you are close to home or a workshop, going there directly is usually better than stopping to investigate.
- Do not plan a long journey on it. How far you can go depends on the battery, its condition and what the car is drawing, and it can be a short distance.
- Avoid driving at night or in heavy rain if you have the choice, because headlights and wipers are exactly the loads you cannot switch off.
- If the temperature gauge starts climbing, stop. That combination points at a broken belt and is far more urgent.
The usual causes
- A broken, slipping or glazed drive belt. Often accompanied by a squeal, especially at start-up or when the steering is turned. This is the case that can also cause overheating.
- A failed alternator, or the voltage regulator inside it.
- Worn brushes inside the alternator, which often produce an intermittent warning that comes and goes before failing completely.
- Corroded, loose or damaged battery cables, or a poor earth connection. Cheap to fix and easy to overlook.
- A blown fusible link or fuse in the charging circuit.
- A failing battery that the alternator cannot charge properly, which can trigger the same warning.
Checking it yourself
With a multimeter across the battery terminals, a rough test takes a minute. With the engine off, a healthy rested battery reads around 12.6 V. Start the engine and the voltage should rise, typically into the region of 13.5 to 14.7 V, as the alternator takes over.
If it does not rise at all, or it falls below the resting figure, the charging system is not working. That is worth knowing before you call anyone.
What it is not
- It is not a signal that your battery has reached the end of its life. A worn-out battery usually announces itself with slow cranking instead.
- It is not safe to ignore because the car still drives normally. It will drive normally right up until it does not.
- On hybrid and electric cars, a 12 V system warning means something similar for the low-voltage system, but the architecture is different and the manufacturer’s instructions matter more than general advice.
After it is fixed
A battery that has been deeply discharged by a charging fault is often damaged by the experience, even after the alternator is replaced. If the car is slow to start afterwards, have the battery tested properly rather than assuming the job is finished.
